Hermitage geology and vine management

Notice here the diversity of the sub-soil (sand, pebbles, clay), revealed by the bed carved into the rock by this little stream. The pebbles, consisting of alluvial conglomerates, are bound together by a limestone cement of varying hardness, creating the irregular sides with visible pebbles.

What is an “échelas” ?

These stakes are part of the terraced vineyard landscape of the Hermitage. Vines are trained up traditional wooden stakes or “échalas”. True to its ancestral traditions, the Cave de Tain has maintained this natural form of vine management, that is well-suited to steep slopes and the weather conditions.
